On my way to the supermarket today I saw a strange sight, a very strange sight indeed. There was an old couple in their late 60’s or early 70’s casually strolling across the crosswalk hand in hand wearing bullet proof vests. I don’t live in a bad neighborhood at all, in fact we are in one of the safer parts of suburban Denver.
But apparently, this older couple felt the need to don bullet proof vests to obtain a modicum of security. I am forced to ask, is this really what it’s come to in America? That ordinary citizens in what would normally be considered safe areas must go to the extreme length of wearing bullet proof vests on a visit to the neighborhood grocery? Has rampant gun violence now actually reached a level that is so widespread and so commonplace that our general citizenry are terrified out of their wits to the point of taking these kinds of extreme measures just to participate in normal routine activities?
While the vast majority of the country believes that gun safety measures must be taken, why do they keep electing politicians who steadfastly oppose even the most basic of these measures? It is confounding to say the least. Something’s gotta give. I don’t have the answers, but I sure see the question clearly.
